Rome in a Day

Scenes around Rome in January. I walked 25,000 steps (says my lyin’ iPhone – it was at least twice that). What is it about Rome? I think it’s the cobblestones. Or maybe the promise of wine. Probably the animated discussions you hear in the street.

The last time I was in Rome I was with Mom and Kyna. It was cold as the dickens, whatever that means. I kept seeing the places we’d all seen together from the relative warmth of the tourist bus.

Mom wore a little furry bucket hat that squashed her hairdo, which she put on my head when picture time came.

This time was cold, too – I spent a fair bit of time going into stores as if to buy something, just to warm up.

Ésta vez también hacia frío. Pasé mucho tiempo entrando en las tiendas. Para calentarme, sostengo.

No idea who this is. I just liked the look of resigned boredom on her dog’s face.

There are just too many things to see, and they are all too grand to soak in.

And then there’s stuff you don’t expect to see:

Breakdance!

Even when they were touristy, I felt like I had just discovered every little piazza we stumbled across.

This time, like last time, I got to visit my friend Marco. He and his wife cook wicked good. They created the homiest, most lovely Roman meal for Mom and I swear it was her favorite moment of the week.

Mom had jet lag – and it was her first time ever. So she felt like crap, her arthritis was screaming from the biting cold, and Kyna and I just dragged her around to this, that and the other site till she was completely wiped out. On the last night we asked her what her favorite part was. What did she like best? What would she remember? We badgered her till finally she erupted, exhausted: “Everything is fine here. But it’s all so old. You know I like more modern things!”

You know she got on a plane to Italy because we asked her to, not because she wanted to see the Sistine Chapel.

It’s not Rome without a Vespa.

2018: Que cara mas temerosa… Nada de sagrada! Terrifying face… not really holy!

2009: I see my photo subjects aren’t very different.

Trevi by night.

This was also the trip where we learned there was, after all, one alcoholic drink in the whole world that she liked. Limoncello.
